Atypical pen grip is highly associated with the presence of a grasp reflex or its remnants. An immature grasp reflex can be involved in the causation of many upper limb motor behavior changes including:
- decreased grip strength
- scapular dyskinesis
- positive kinetic medial rotation test
- upper limb tone (increased or decreased)
- ability to learn specific motor control exercises for the upper limb
It is important to address causation in rehabilitation so understanding how to assess and rehabilitation the grasp reflex and it’s remnants are important.
Why? The further you move away from a standard pen grip, the more you are using proximal motor behavior to guide distally.
